Madam/Sir
In your feature published today ‘Greek Cypriots offer northern Turks a way out’ you state “Northern Cyprus, mainly Turkish, split away from Cyprus in 1974.” Your use of the word ‘split away’ is inaccurate and inappropriate – an equivalent statement would be that Northern Ireland split away from the rest of Ireland. International and European law recognise that the northern part of Cyprus is under occupation since 1974.
02.10.08
Dear viewer,
The story accurately reflected the historical events, the context in which the occured and their ramifications for the island. It also made it very clear that northern Cyprus has no legitimacy in the eyes of the international community and that only Turkey recognises it as a state. No impartial viewer could have been misled. I was disappointed that your female announcer said: There is GOOD NEWS for smokers in Geneva! What she should have said was: There is BAD NEWS for non-smokers in Geneva! With 80% of the population voting against smoking in public places, how can she then say this is good news? Such a comment is not only annoying but it shows a negative viewpoint vis-a-vis the health of the population. Will she, when this is reversed, then state there is bad news for smokers? Or say it is good news for the majority? Does she smoke herself and was she guided to say those words or were they off her own back?

Yesterday Le Mag in TV euronews Hotbird sat featured an article on a new production of the show ‘Priscilla’. This item doesn’t seem to be listed at all on the web version of Le Mag. Why is this?
29.09.08
Dear viewer We can’t put all the on-air output from Le Mag on line, much as we would like to. What you have access to is a selection of the best bits. Thanks for your comment.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I’m a Romanian resident and a football fan. I want to express my complaints about the weekly league reports on euronews. The results of the football matches from the major european leagues are presented, excluding Romanian Liga I. I consider this unfair, taking into account that Liga I is positioned on the 7th place in the latest League coefficient ranking, in front of Portugal and Netherlands, which are mentioned in the report. I hope this would be fairly analysed and a proper decision will be made. Thank you. Sincerely, Andrei Leczfalvi
29.09.08
Dear viewer We can’t mention all the leagues, so we focus on those of our individual language services or leagues that are considered to be of the widest interest to an international audience. But you have made a good case for the inclusion of Romania and we will take your comments on board. Head of English service

Regarding your news story sep 22, 2008 on the ETA assasination in Cantabria, please note: Cantabria is not part of the Basque Country!
29.09.08
Dear viewer We didn’t say Cantabria was part of the Basque country in the report to which you are referring, but rather that it was within the sphere of Basque cultural influence. However, I appreciate such a phrase could be misleading. It was for that reason we changed it on the day so that subsequent versions avoided any ambiguity. Head of English service

Dear Sirs:
In your reporting of the failure if a major U.K. tour company operating its own air component, I believe you are underplaying a major issue – one to which the President of XL alluded but also failed to clarify adequately.
Recently the President of Delta Airlines sent a personal message to all frequent flyer members. His was a message sent by the Presidents of some forty other airlines to their frequent flyer members. I actually received four such messages. The message reached many millions of frequent travelers.
The communication detailed very explicitly the financial convolutions through which a barrel of oil passes between the point of production and the point of sale to a commercial airline. The issue really is that riches beyond the comprehension of the average person are being levied by a relatively small number of intermediaries. Not only do these brokers make obscene profits, but also they are enemies of democracy, as most of us understand it. We were asked to send E-mail messages to our government representatives. I did, and I imagine that millions of others did also.
The question you should be asking is “why are fuel costs so high, and who stands between the point of origin and the point of sale?” We all know that there is no shortage of fuel, only that the sources of fuel are strategically located, at the moment.
You would be doing many millions of people a favor by asking strategic questions, and seeking answers from politicians who are clearly failing to represent their constituencies by clearing the financial path between source and user.
The airline industry was one of the first to be internationally privatized but even private enterprise cannot operate to the benefit of the wider public when dark forces about which we know very little victimize it. It is an unacceptable scenario – innocent and honest working people around the world are being ruthlessly exploited by a small number of entrepreneurs whose role is only that of strategic “middle man”.
These nameless, faceless individuals are the real villains behind the failure of air carriers and the suffering of many thousands of people as a result.
The real situation and, if possible, the individuals themselves, deserve the publicity you can provide.
On a related issue, you are an international network so might I suggest and request that you explain certain terms that are specifically local?
Regarding the XL stories, the term “filed for administration” has been repeatedly utilized. The term suggests something other than the seizure of assets, the shutting down of operations and the abandoning of consumer’s situations, which seem to have been the case. In America the equivalent situation would seem to be the filing of proceedings under Chapter 11 of the bankruptcy code. The major difference between the two systems seems to be that in America a corporation in financial difficulty continues to operate and inconvenience to consumers is minimized. Several major airlines in the USA have emerged from Chapter 11 having had the opportunity to reorganize and regain viability. It is surprising to many of your international viewers that something similar does not exist in the UK/Europe.
Sincerely
Tony Jewiss

Dear viewer You have raised an issue that many feel very strongly about and which we have delved into previously in analysis of the oil markets. It is one to which, in the current economic climate, we are certain to return. Regarding the terms “filed for administration” and “Chapter 11”, where possible we try to explain them in a line. But it is not always possible to give a detailed definition because of script time restraints. Thanks for your comments.

Sir, general opinion is that current crisis was triggered by subprime problems followed by consumer overspending followed by prime mortgage implosions. Subprime appears to have been based in it vast majority on falsified document for sale of housing to basically un-eligible buyers.
these falsified documents, lacking any real risk analysis were wrapped into ver opaque derivatives and sold globally, again without due dilligence neither by sellers nor by buyers, to over-greedy institutions. Now, that Mae&Mac are under the umbrella, to say the least, of a Goverbnment bureaucracy, can we expect that bureaucracy to engage in fully detailed risk anaysis and value assessment better than the private sector ? Experience with spending methods from bureaucracy, I fear not. How long before Mae&Mac have collapsed beyond any possible rescue operation ? Add to that all similar “sins” commited in other markets ! The victims : The vast majority of citizens world wide no involved in such machinations yet who will be paying for it !

Dear Editor: Your Aug. 26th article, “Honduras signs up to Chavez-led bloc,” ignores salient economic factors and portrays Honduras’ move to join Venezuela-sponsored ALBA as solely politically driven. Although it is true that many regional leaders, including the Honduran president Manuel Zelaya, see ALBA as a revolt against imperialism-especially against the domination of the United States, the motivation was also economically driven. As one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, Honduras does not receive sufficient foreign aid. After prominent international lending institutions like the World Bank turned down the country’s request for aid, ALBA and President Chavez’s checkbook apparently opened a window for Honduras. Faced with an opportunity for significant financial aid and a guaranteed supply of subsidized oil, it was only practical for President Zelaya to join.
Sincerely,

Hey there just stumbled across this site a few weeks ago and absolutely love the non CNN perspective. Unfortunately lately I’ve been finding whenever I press play on the videos it will only play for a few seconds then pause for a little while and then start up for a few seconds again. Thanks this site has been excellent for learning to listen to other languages and start to pick out bits and pieces.

I’ve beena big fan of euronews for a few years now andI have recently begun to check out this online news site. Its a great site and I have no major problems with it.
Just a couple of quiries though;
Is there any way to install a SEARCH button. Quite often I like to see Irish news from a European perspective but because there are few stories from Ireland (quite spot really), Its hard to find them.
regards

Dear viewer We are going to install a search facility but we can’t put a firm date on it yet. It is one of a number of improvements that are under development. Head of English Service
