I watch euronews via Sky and I was wondering why black bars have been added to the top and bottom of the screen. They don’t even cover all the horizontal section as you can see thin parts of the video around the edges of them. The video on your website doesn’t suffer from this addition. Is this a cost saving effort to allow less bandwidth use?

    13.11.08

Dear viewer, euronews is currently switching to a 16/9 format in line with technological developments, but not all video material we receive from our news sources all over the world corresponds to those dimensions. As more and more viewers are watching euronews on new TV sets, we use the black bars to facilitate the on-screen output in 16/9 format. The website videos do not require such reformating.

Mr. Obama is not the first black elected to the U. S. Senate, as euronews reported. Also, in addition to his law degree from Harvard, he holds a bachelor’s degree from Princeton.

    07.11.08

Dear viewer As you can imagine there has been a multitude of scripts written about President-elect Obama in recent days, not to mention the considerable live output, so without having precise references to work from it’s difficult to comment on your observation. If you let us know at what time you heard the remark in question it would be a great help. Head of English Service

Dear Readers, Over a period of many months I have read many comments regarding situations happening in the European Union.I am a frequent visitor to Ireland ( The Celtic Tiger) and have observed the cost of living in that country! I have also noted the way the Commissionairs ‘sic’ of the EU have all got their snouts in the trough. Do they have no shame! They pay themselves fat – cat saleries – Plus- vast expences, and then expect the rest of the workers within the EU to absorb all the price rises bought about by oil and commodity price increases whilst the Commissionairs are living the ‘Life of Riley’. Your days are numbered- I hope! Thank God ( Am I allowed to say that now) that we British are in- but not in- the EU, and the sooner we detach ourselves from it the better off we will be! Regards to all my fellow sufferers- David Wallis.

    Dear viewer,
You express an interesting and challenging viewpoint, which is likely to divide opinion among euronews followers. This forum is partly about generating debate on topical issues, so over to you viewers.

I was just watching news and I saw a clip on Kenya and a simulated vote. I cannot find it on your Youtube channel. I watch euronews from Toronto, Canada and all of a sudden its in French. It used to be in ENglish. What happened? I can hardly comprehend what is being sad but I appreciate the ‘no drama’ presentation. Everything here IS breaking news and so annoying.

Thanks for the good work. I would be happier if it went back to English
    Merci ;)

    Dear viewer,
Not everything on Euronwews television appears on the internet. I have reported your complaint about the English version switching to French and we are investigating it. Thanks for your comments. Head of English Service

Is there any reason why the Greek language is not catered for on euronews? After all, two of the
member countries, Greece and Cyprus, are Greek speaking.
    Regards, Mark.

    05.11.08

Dear viewer, It’s a question of investment by our partner channels. At the moment there isn’t a Greek language version but euronews is continually seeking to expand its output and the provision of additional languages is on the cards.

Dear Editors, I would like to inform you about missing information on your weather pages on euronews.net. Turkey is shown in Europe on TV, but on euronews.net, it is on Asia, this is inconsistent and misleading information. On the other hand, Istanbul, one of the greatest cities in Europe, is not listed in any divison???. I believe you will take the necessary steps for correction.

    All my best,
    Yigit from Istanbul/Turkey.

    Dear Sirs,
Here in Sankt-Petersburg, Russia your channel is retranslated by TKT company. They constantly insert advertisements of their own and not only in the time of the very euronews but practically in ANY other time – news, press round-up, sport etc. The volume of their ads is increased by 10 dB at least in comparison with normal.
    That’s why the questions:
1.Dot hey have the right to insert their own ads in your programs?
2.Do they have the right to do this in ANY time?
3.Do they have the right to increase the volume of the ads blocks?
I tried to ask these questions from the Russian version of the site but somehow my messages were rejected by antispam. That’s why English.
    Thank you in advance.

Dear viewer, We will look into the questions you raise with our Russian colleagues. Head of English Service

    Dear Sir/Madame!
Is it right or wrong, that Georgian parlament has different opinion than President Saakashvili about Georgian war in South Ossetia, and spiker Nino Gurdzhanadze prepared, publicated and officially ask 41 questions about this war to President Saakashvili. It’s very interesting and sensationaly, will you tell us about it in euronews, please!
    Thank you.
    Sergei from Finland.

    Dear Editors,
I am not very surprised of that kind of approaches but I am seriously wondering the reason lying behind that you call PKK as rebels. Who, why and when decided Palestinians, IRA and ETA are terrorists and the other groups supported by imperialists are rebels?

    14.10.08

Dear viewer “Terrorism” and “terrorist” are terms to be used with caution as they can be regarded as inherently judgemental. Where possible in the commentary we make the point that the PKK is listed as a terrorist organisation by the EU and the US. This simply provides the viewer with a relevant background fact. Whether or not you regard the PKK as a terrorist organisation, it is a rebel group and to describe it as such is not incorrect, nor does it contradict the terrorism claim. Head of English Service.

    Good evening,

let me comment today’s (Oct.1st. 2008) part of the tv information programme on euronews concerning the refugees from Osetia and Abkhasia and especially visit of Javier Solana in Georgia. The commenting Russian voice suggested that Mr. Solana prefering rather to visit refugees went to Georgia and is not interested in refugees went to Russia. It is difficult to belive that the Russian translation is the exact from the original (English or French). I suggest to check from time to time the Russian translations going on euronews.
    Kind regards
    Piotr

Dear viewer None of the services are a simple translation of another service. The images are broadcast simultaneously and the scripts in all languages are written to the same structure. The eight versions should convey the same editorial themes and largely provide the same information. But all journalists express themselves in different ways and have contrasting styles. The essential information should remain the same, however. Head of English Service
